FAQ: document formats and import
Updated on 18 June 2026
Accepted formats, file size, scan, import, and deposit email: the answers to add your documents without a hitch.
Everything you need to know to add your documents to the vault, whatever device you use.
Which file formats can I add?
The vault accepts images in JPG, PNG, and HEIC formats, as well as PDFs. This covers nearly all everyday documents, whether it is a photo of a paper or a file received by email.
Is there a maximum size per file?
Yes, each file must not exceed a certain size. This limit very generously covers an everyday document. If an import is refused, lower the photo resolution or split an oversized PDF into several lighter documents.
How do I add a document from my iPhone?
You can scan it directly with the camera from the app, or import a file already on your device. The scan automatically straightens and cleans up the shot.
And from the web?
On the web, you add your documents by file import. Camera scanning is specific to the iOS app.
Can I send a document by email to my vault?
Yes. The vault has a personal deposit email address. Simply forward a document to this address to find it in your vault, which is handy for an attachment received by email.
My scan is blurry, how do I improve it?
Place the document on a contrasting, well-lit surface, hold the device steady, and wait for focus before capturing. Check legibility before saving: a sharp document is easier to find with content search.
A format is not accepted, what should I do?
Convert your document into a supported format, for example to PDF, or take a sharp photo of it to import. You will get a clean, searchable document in your vault.
