How long can an exceptional recovery take?

Updated on 26 August 2026

Exceptional recovery opens a case checked by your trusted contacts, with an incompressible 72-hour security delay.

Exceptional recovery is the last resort, reserved for situations where no automatic method works. It never grants access automatically: it opens a case that must be verified before anything is unlocked. Plan for at least 72 hours.

Why it takes time

Two checks cannot be bypassed. Your request is validated by your trusted contacts (a quorum of 2 out of the total), and an incompressible 72-hour security delay applies. No one can speed these steps up: support has no button to override them.

How to recover faster

Exceptional recovery only kicks in when no faster method is available. If you still have one of the following, you regain access without waiting:

 • A backup code, generated in advance and single-use.
 • A passkey, which authenticates you directly.
 • Another device already connected to your account, from which you approve the request.

Once recovery is complete, all your existing sessions are signed out and you sign back in with your new factor. The old email or number can no longer be used to log in.
