Managing the household budget

Updated on 19 June 2026

Track shared spending, keep a shared view and set budgets when you manage your finances together.

Managing a household in Noryo means tracking the family's money together without giving up your personal financial life. Everyone keeps control of their own data, and you also have a shared view to understand where the household's money goes. This article explains how to keep the household budget under control day to day.

What the household budget covers

The household brings together up to four people (the owner and three other members) around a shared view. This shared view helps you see the household's major expenses (rent, groceries, energy, subscriptions) without having to piece everything back together by hand. The household budget is not a joint account: it is an overall picture built from what each member chooses to share.

Setting budgets suited to life together

Noryo's budgets work by spending category (for example food, housing, transport). You set a monthly cap and a progress bar shows you, in real time, what has been spent and what is left. For a household, the idea is to set caps on the heaviest shared categories so you can quickly spot a month that gets out of hand.

 • A green bar as long as you stay within the envelope.
 • An orange alert as you approach the cap, to ease off in time.
 • A red signal if you go over, so you can discuss it together.

Tracking shared spending through the month

For one-off shared expenses (a weekend away, a party, joint purchases), Notebooks are the most suitable tool: they record who paid and for whom, then automatically work out the balances and a simple repayment plan. The household gives the overall picture, the Notebook settles the accounts case by case.

Keeping control of your data

Being part of a household gives no one free access to your accounts. Each member keeps control of their information and chooses what feeds the shared view. The roles precisely frame what each person can see and edit, and the owner manages who is in the household.

Best practices

 • Do a quick check on the shared view at the start of the month.
 • Keep budgets for the shared categories that really matter.
 • Use a Notebook as soon as an expense needs to be split between several people.
 • Readjust the caps when your way of life changes.
