Understanding categories

Updated on 18 June 2026

How Noryo sorts your spending: the category taxonomy and the automatic categorisation of your transactions.

Categories are the backbone of your tracking. They turn a long list of transactions into a clear view: how much goes to housing, food, transport or leisure. This article explains how Noryo sorts your spending and how the app handles it automatically.

An organised taxonomy

Noryo files your transactions into a taxonomy, that is a consistent set of categories: housing, transport, food, and many more. Each expense joins the category that fits it, which makes comparing and analysing easy.

Automatic categorisation

When a transaction arrives, Noryo automatically assigns it a likely category based on the merchant and the transaction type. So you have almost nothing to do: most of your spending is sorted as soon as it lands.

Transactions to categorise

Sometimes Noryo cannot determine the category with certainty. These transactions appear in the to categorise filter, so you can sort them in a few seconds. Handling them regularly keeps your analyses accurate.

Manual expenses

Cash or off-bank payments do not appear automatically. You can add them by hand and assign them a category, so your tracking truly reflects all of your spending.

To make your preferences last over time, discover the automatic categorisation rules.
