What happens after an account recovery?

Updated on 26 August 2026

After a successful recovery, all your sessions are signed out, the old factor stops working, and you receive a security notification.

Account recovery replaces the factor you lost, for example a new email address or a new phone number. It is not just resetting a password. Once the recovery succeeds, your account automatically applies several security measures. Here is what happens.

What changes right away

  • All your open sessions are signed out. You need to sign back in with your new factor.
  • Your old email or phone number can no longer be used to sign in or to identify you.
  • A security event is logged and a notification is sent to you.

This full sign-out makes sure no device stays connected with an old access. It is a safeguard, not an error.

If you did not start this recovery

You are notified for every recovery, which is exactly what the notification is for. If a request is started without your consent, act immediately from the app. For an exceptional recovery, you are alerted as soon as the case is opened, and a "This wasn't me" link permanently freezes the request. No one, not even support, can bypass these checks.
